Q&A with Lindsay Phillips, Founder of SwitchFlops by Lindsay Phillips, Inc.

Lindsay Phillips is the 25-year-old founder of SwitchFlops by Lindsay Phillips, Inc., and winner of a Stevie Award for Best Entrepreneur in a Non-Services Business in the 2009 Stevie Awards for Women in Business.

Lindsay PhillipsWhat item of news recently caught your eye and why?
The other weekend I read an interesting article in the New York Times: “But Will it Make You Happy?” by Stephanie Rosenbloom. It talks about how bigger is not always better and that people seem to be happier when they spend money on experiences instead of material objects. I liked this article because my generation in particular needs to stop thinking about what we don’t have and focus on the things we do have.  We really don’t need a lot to be happy!

What book are you currently reading?
Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose, by Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos. Tony talks about everything that went into creating Zappos, and the constant risk and daily struggles he went through while building the company. The corporate culture he has created at Zappos is mind-blowing. If you are an entrepreneur you need to read this book. Just remember: If what Tony did had been easy, everyone would be doing it. Personally, I am inspired by his story and what he has accomplished.

What was the last movie you saw, and would you recommend it?
The last movie I saw was Knight and Day starring Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise. I thought it was entertaining and would definitely recommend it.

What is your favorite sport or hobby?
Anything that involves the ocean!

How a Turkish Bank Initiated Incentives for Women in Business

Garanti Bank in Istanbul, Turkey has won the Stevie Award for Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the Year in Europe in The 2010 International Business Awards.  Martha Hooper, representative for The Stevie Awards in Turkey, sent us the following report on how the bank is encouraging women entrepreneurs in Turkey.

Nafiz KaradereWhat could be better than a corporate responsibility program that focuses on social issues aligned with economic needs? Turkey’s Garanti Bank has done just that by creating its Women Entrepreneurship Program: a program that aims to promote entrepreneurship for women while at the same time furthering the bank’s goal to help improve the overall business performance of its customers.

This program has been hugely successful in helping to enhance the business capacities of women entrepreneurs in Turkey, and is providing additional economic benefits throughout the communities where these women operate.  But what motivated Garanti to accomplish this achievement?

Conspicuous in their Absence
Garanti has sponsored conferences for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) for a number of years. During these conferences, it became clear to Garanti that businesswomen were conspicuous by their absence from the Turkish business world.  The bank came to the logical conclusion that in order to fill this deficiency in the Turkish business community, women needed more support.

Research conducted by Garanti’s SME Banking division, under the leadership of Executive Vice President Nafiz Karadere, revealed that financial support, education for professional development, and encouragement were just some of the factors needed to increase the numbers of women entrepreneurs and their contribution to the Turkish economy.

Garanti became the first bank in Turkey to classify women entrepreneurs as a distinct business segment. Today, Garanti reaches women entrepreneurs through SME Customer Relationship Managers at Garanti branches in 76 cities.

Oceana on the Water

Early this year the Stevie Awards announced its year-long support of Oceana, the largest international organization promoting ocean conservation. Once a month in this space we'll update you on Oceana's activities, and how you can support their mission.

LatitudeOceana, the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation, has recently launched a two-month research expedition from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The expeditions aim is to assess the long-term impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico and its marine life as well as to document areas that could be impacted by the spill if oil becomes caught in certain sea currents.

This exciting expedition will be led by oceanographer Xavier Pastor, vice president for Oceana Europe, and will take place aboard the Oceana Latitude, a 170 foot vessel capable of sailing in both shallow and deep waters. Oceana will also collaborate with several U.S. universities, including the University of Miami and the University of Southern Mississippi, and plans to release reports that describe the impacts of oil on marine species.

During the expedition, Oceana scientists from both sides of the Atlantic, directed by Dr. Michael Hirshfield, senior vice president for North America and chief scientist at Oceana, will work with specialized divers, underwater photographers and videographers as well as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to analyze the magnitude of the oil spill and its effect on sensitive habitats and marine species such as coral. Oceana will also tag several shark and sea turtle species to monitor their migration patterns and study their ability to avoid oil contaminated areas as well as take samples of water, fish larvae, plankton and adult fish.
